How number parking actually works
Instead of staying on an expensive plan just to hold onto a number you're not using, you port that number over to a service built for exactly this. Anyone who calls it hears a short, pre-recorded message letting them know the number is parked, so nobody thinks it's disconnected or reaches a stranger. If you'd rather they leave a message or get forwarded somewhere else, voicemail and call forwarding can be added on top at any time.

Here's what most people don't realize until it's too late. The moment you cancel service with a carrier, that number isn't yours anymore. Under FCC rules, you have the right to port a number while your service is active, and switching providers while staying in the same area lets you keep your existing number. Once it's cancelled, that protection is gone. Carriers typically release the number back into circulation after a period of inactivity, and once that happens, it's gone for good. Most big carriers do offer some version of a temporary hold, but they call it suspension, not parking, and the terms are a lot more limited than people expect. Here's what each carrier's own terms allow.
