Number parking works like this: instead of staying on an expensive plan just to hold onto a number you're not using, you port that number over to a service built for exactly this. With Park My Phone's Deep Freeze plan, that costs $3/month, instead of a full phone bill. The number stays yours the entire time. Anyone who calls it hears a short, pre-recorded message letting them know the number is parked, so nobody thinks it's disconnected or reaches a stranger. If you'd rather they leave a message or get forwarded somewhere else, voicemail and call forwarding can be added on top at any time.

When you're ready to use the number again, you can reactivate it, add those features, or port it out to a new carrier. Nothing about the number changes. You just stop paying for a full plan to keep it alive.

Here's what most people don't realize until it's too late. The moment you cancel service with a carrier, that number isn't yours anymore. Under FCC rules, you have the right to port a number while your service is active, and switching providers while staying in the same area lets you keep your existing number. Once it's cancelled, that protection is gone. Carriers typically release the number back into circulation after a period of inactivity, and once that happens, it's gone for good. No warning, no grace period you can count on.

That's the real risk. Not the cost of a plan you don't need, but losing a number tied to your business, your identity, or years of history with the people who call it.

Most big carriers do offer some version of a temporary hold, but they call it suspension, not parking, and the terms are a lot more limited than people expect. Here's what each carrier's own terms allow.

U.S. Carriers
CarrierWhat They Actually Allow
T-Mobile Seasonal Suspend, up to 90 days per suspension, limited to twice per rolling 12-month period. Full monthly plan charge still applies.
Verizon No personal-reason suspension exists at all. Only Lost/Stolen (30 days) or Military Deployment. Verizon's own page specifically states you cannot suspend service if you're going to be out of the country for a long period of time, meaning travelers have no suspension option to fall back on.
Canadian Carriers
CarrierWhat They Actually Allow
RogersUp to 185 total days per calendar year.
FidoUp to 185 total days per calendar year.
BellNo suspension option available outside lost or stolen devices.
Freedom MobileVacation Pass, $15/month, up to 12 months per year.

So even in the best case, you're capped at a number of days per year, you're often still paying close to your full plan cost, and once you hit the limit, you're back to square one. That's the tradeoff with suspension. It was never built to hold a number indefinitely. It was built to pause a plan for a season, and for some carriers, not even that.

Number parking doesn't have a day limit. There's no 90-day clock, no 185-day cap, no once-a-year restriction. You keep the number for as long as you want, for a fraction of what most carriers charge to suspend a line. When you're ready to use the number again, you're not racing a deadline. You just reactivate it.

Will I lose my number if I cancel my plan?

Only if you don't port it first. Cancelling your phone service without porting it away means the carrier can reassign the number.

How long can I suspend my line instead?

It depends on the carrier, and it's always limited. Most cap it between 90 and 185 days a year, and some carriers don't offer it at all.

Is number parking cheaper than suspending my line?

In almost every case, yes. Suspension fees are often close to your regular plan cost. Parking starts at $3/month with no time limit.

Can I still use the number while it's parked?

Not for calls or texts by default, but you can choose our voicemail or call forwarding plans. Or our WiFi calling plan if you want callers to reach you.
